five artists, four countries, ninety days in Graz is the title of an evening of dance and visual art at the Rondo artists’ studios on September 17th, starting 7.30pm.
The five artists in question come from different disciplines, different corners of the world and address different themes, but are connected by their residency at the Rondo studio.
Syrian video artist and photographer Lamis Al Mohamad addresses the connection between human body and architecture: “We see lines, curves and shapes… we can see the huge value of these points in both human body and architecture as well…
Clearly, the beauty of a building depends not only on the harmony of its forms and proportions, but also a sense of balance generated by the disposal of its rhythmic elements.
I believe that this rhythmic balance is caused by the harmony of lines in there and curves as well…and this is what it is exactly about in human body.”
Canadian-based dancers Lindsay Alford and Mark Medrano will be presenting a special preview of @tendance/C.Medina’s newest creation “It is not always WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get)”. Graz-based choreographer Christina Medina explores the complexity of relationships and the many forms in which they exist.
During her two-month residency at Rondo Studios, Aneli Munteanu has been working on an installation that foregrounds the conflict between the culturally bound significations of a series of images and their titles. The installation prompts the viewers to resolve this conflict, while at the same time forcing them to question the limits beyond which the author's intention and the viewer's cultural expectations are unable to generate any stable meaning.
Japanese visual artist Masaki Umetsu will be showing a light installation, which was made in Rotterdam, the Netherlands in 2009 and is now adapted to fit with the RONDO studio. More than 5,000 pages taken from different dictionaries have been transformed into light screens. The numerous combined pages construct layers and the words lose their essential meaning and function. Using penetrating light, the elements will be further emphasized, and appear on the surface as a pattern in a mosaic of words.
