Competition Brief
Healthy streetscapes are a critical element of the Chicago urban landscape. Part of that landscape is the daily interaction between reader and news vendor. While media evolves with the pace of technology, the tangible object continues to deteriorate. The utilitarian nature of the newsstand does little to realize its full potential as a design installation.
Recent studies suggest print media sales are declining by perhaps two percent per year. Chicago newsstand owners say seen sales decline by as much as two-thirds. Although stand operators aren’t sure how to adapt business to the changing marketplace, the industry is redefining itself as purveyor of news and information through all forms of new media--print tabloids, internet news and streaming content. At this crossroads of change, the opportunity to examine the newsstand presents
itself. Can it evolve? Can its role within the community be sustained? Can it be improved and strengthened?
Entrants are called upon to submit their proposed design solutions for the newStand, addressing a) the decline of print media; b) the positive effects of community business; and c) small scale architectural impact on the streetscape.Submission Process:
